Kathleen provided a lovely saltillo (a finely woven wool shawl from Mexico) and then I drew the design and painted this door. A testament to the long life of lettering enamel (before it was lead-free), the colors are still bright and vivid today.
This door was laid out and painted on-site, something I would never do again. I did use a straight edge to establish the lines (many of which are 1/16” wide) but no tape was used. Each main color had about 8 graduations mixed, about 3 oz. of each color.
I don’t remember how long it took, but I would do one again for two thousand bucks, in my studio, and know I would do a better job today.
